Everyone should be ready to watch the Detroit Lions online this year. Head coach Jim Schwartz is ready to lead his team onto Ford Field and right back into the playoffs again this year. The Detroit Lions have become a solid, polarizing team, which makes for great headlines almost every week.
Matthew Stafford injured his non-throwing hand on the facemask of David Tollefson, a defensive end for the Oakland Raiders, in the Lions' third preseason game this year. Fortunately, the x-rays came back negative and Stafford reportedly feels fine now. Matthew Stafford had a monster 2011 season, with 5,038 yards on 421 completions and 41 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of just under one hundred.
Calvin Johnson caught a whopping sixteen of Stafford's touchdown passes last year, including 96 receptions for 1,681 monstrous yards. Johnson's enormous frame and impressive wingspan allow him to regularly catch Stafford's passes in double and even triple coverage, especially in the end zone. Tight end Brandon Pettigrew recorded 777 yards and five touchdowns, while Titus Young and Tony Scheffler each had six of their own TDs. Nate Burleson put up 757 yards and had three receiving touchdowns, as well.
Running back Kevin Smith also caught three touchdown passes from Stafford, in addition to four rushing TDs and 356 yards to Jahvid Best's 390 yards and two scores, plus one through the air from Stafford, as well. Unfortunately, it's looking like Jahvid Best might be entering the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, as he recovers from the October 16 concussion he suffered, his second of the year. That means Kevin Smith and Keiland Williams will be leading the rushing attack when the season starts, with Mike LeShoure as the third back until Best is healthy enough to return to the field.
On the other side of the field, the Detroit Lions have one of the most fearsome defenses in the league. Left defensive end Cilff Avril recorded an impressive eleven sacks for 92 yards lost, in addition to a four-yard interception return for a touchdown, in addition to six forced fumbles resulting in two more defensive touchdowns. Right defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch had eight sacks for 63 yards lost and four forced fumbles. Vanden Bosch is also known for his frightening "red eyes", which are attributed to the Nike MAXSIGHT contact lenses he wears that make the football easier to see by increasing contrast.
Ndamukong Suh may get all the headlines, but Avril is one of the Lions' key defensive components. Speaking of Suh, despite all the attention surrounding him last year, his stats weren't as impressive as the previous year, due in no small part to the two games he missed for stomping on Green Bay Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith on that infamous Thanksgiving game heard 'round the world. Suh still recorded four sacks for 31 yards lost, however. If anyone on the Lions has anything to prove this year, it's Ndamukong Suh.
If one thing is for sure, these guys are a force to be reckoned with, so keep your eyes fixed on your monitor as you watch the Detroit Lions online this season.
